Climate Change and Clean Energy Fundamentals and Signposts
With so many interconnected policy, market, and technology developments, it is challenging to identify and track the most critical fundamentals and signposts in the rapidly changing climate change and clean energy (CCCE) landscape. This research is intended to develop a structured approach for identifying and assessing CCCE fundamentals and signposts for Europe and North America on an ongoing basis. To be delivered as a Power Point briefing, this deliverable will synthesize key CCEF findings and insights to help CCEF members formulate timely, successful strategies in the face of rapid changes and uncertainty.

The IHS Green Spread: Europe and North America
Cost components of conventional and renewable energy have been volatile. Determining appropriate cost estimates and the proper cost comparison with conventional sources of power can be challenging. IHS CERA has delivered the IHS CERA Green Spread--North America, a tool that tracks and benchmarks the full cost position of wind and solar relative to a combined-cycle gas turbine. In addition to updating the historical view for North America, we will also focus on showing historical results for Europe. The analysis will help clients understand where to invest and how much renewables can be built by estimating which types of projects have the least cost and what the total cost premium is of adding an entire portfolio of renewables.

    Carbon Decision Frameworks
There continues to be significant uncertainty regarding the costs of carbon abatement. The uncertainty regarding the timing, availability and cost of various carbon abatement options creates confusion for both individual company strategy as well as policy analysis. IHS CERA’s Carbon Decisions Framework seeks to bring clarity to this challenging landscape by providing objective analysis to compare abatement potential and costs across sectors over time.

Capturing Carbon and Capturing Value: Rewards and Risks along the CCS Value Chain
The widespread deployment of CCS depends upon attracting the appropriate competencies and levels of investment along the CCS value chain. For this research, we will explore the opportunities and risks along the different stages of the value chain. Key questions include: Will proposed liability regimes be adequate to attract investment in storage? Will EOR operators pay or get paid for CO2? Are the reported costs of transport and storage consistent with the risk-adjusted returns on investment?
