IHS CERA is pleased to announce that the Global Steam Coal Roundtable will be taking place in London on October 15th.

The global steam coal market has come through the recession in better shape than any might have imagined in July 2008, thanks almost entirely to increases in import demand in China and India. It looks as though European buyers may soon be ready to dip their toes back into international waters, but they will find they are in a much-changed world now. This Roundtable explores that world and the strategies that these buyers will need to adopt to take their place in it.

  • Generators in Europe and the United States have been destocking since late 2009 in response to weak electricity demand and low gas prices. However, IHS CERA is picking up signs that the inventory drawdown might be coming to an end, indicating that a revival in steam coal requirements from the international market might be about to begin. The first half of this Roundtable explores how realistic these expectations of recovery in Europe’s market are, by looking at the degree of inventory drawdown that will have taken place by the beginning of the winter burn and by assessing the gas and power market outlooks in Europe.
  • While Europe has held itself aloof from the global market, the world’s exporters have found alternative takers for their supplies. South Africa, Russia, and even Colombia are now shipping record volumes of steam coal to Asia, particularly to customers in China and India. So where will the European buyers fit in to the new global steam coal order? Will they be able to secure supplies? And at what price? The second half of the Roundtable addresses these crucial questions.
