Jeroen Van der Veer, Chief Executive of Royal Dutch Shell, focused on long-term trends, the effect of the current recession, and government's role, urging continued investment. "The upturn in the economy will come," and a long-term demand for energy will continue.

In his Opening Address, Gerhard Schröder discussed several strategic issues surrounding energy, including climate change, "a huge threat" with the potential to disrupt geopolitical stability; international cooperation in transportation and markets; and greater energy efficiency and use of renewables.

Daniel Yergin moderated a Special Economic Forum with three of the world's leading economists: Nariman Behravesh, Chief Economist at IHS Global Insight; Kenneth Rogoff, Thomas D. Cabot Professor of Public Policy and Professor of Economics, Harvard University; and Nouriel Roubini, Professor of Economics and International Business, New York University, and Chairman, RGE Monitor.

"The Carbon Conundrum" offered the views of James E. Rogers, Duke Energy Corporation; Philippe Joubert (above), Alstom; and Lawrence J. Makovich, CERA, on the politics, technology, and economics surrounding solutions to a low-carbon global economy.
