Energy for Transportation: A New Mix for the 21st Century?
Today oil is the primary fuel for most of the world's transportation needs. But the alignment of several trends could mean a major shift in the future of transportation fuels, creating new winners and losers in its wake.
- Policymakers and consumers are increasingly concerned about oil's costs, environmental impacts, and continued availability.
- Advances in technologies such as hybrid electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids and fuels such as ethanol, hydrogen and biodiesel continue to emerge as potential supplements and alternatives to oil and the traditional internal combustion engine.
- Legislative and policy decisionsfueled by popular and political awareness of the issuescould hasten the development of these alternatives.
