| Power Sector Investment: Global Capital, Local Strategies | ||||||||||||||||||
12:00 - 1:15 PM
The power business is at the leading edge of a huge wave of capital spending: in North America alone over $900 billion is needed over the next 15 years. Capital flows are increasingly liquid and global; but a power company's strategic focus, physical assets, and core competencies are still regional and local. Thus, no matter the financial structure, successful M&A requires regional/local expertise and good relationships with regulators and policy-makers whether in North America, Europe, Asia, or elsewhere. And though electric power markets are regional with regard to supply and demand fundamentals, they are becoming increasingly linked via global competition for construction materials, equipment, and services needed for new generation and transmission projects. Successful investment in the power sector will need to reflect the growing global/local tension between capital markets and company strategies. |
